According to DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa, Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which deals with actions, gestures, or acts intended to outrage the modesty of a woman.
The Delhi Police’s IFSO unit on Sunday filed an FIR against Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra for her comments regarding National Commission of Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma.
Moitra has been charged under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts intended to outrage the modesty of a woman, according to DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa.
Earlier, the NCW had taken suo motu notice of Moitra’s remarks and requested an FIR against her. On July 4, Moitra posted a video on X platform showing Sharma at the site of a stampede in Hathras, which was later removed. The video included a man holding an umbrella walking behind Sharma.
“The NCW stated in a post on X, ‘An FIR should be filed against Moitra, and a detailed action report should be submitted to the Commission within 3 days.'”
In its complaint, the NCW mentioned that “Moitra’s crude remarks are highly offensive and blatantly violate a woman’s right to live with dignity.”
In response to the NCW’s post, Moitra commented, “Come on Delhi Police, please take immediate action as per your suo motu orders. I am in Nadia, and I can be available for arrest within the next 3 days if needed. I am capable of holding my own umbrella.”
