UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that his government is committed to supporting a “peaceful and democratic future” for Bangladesh.

New Delhi: The British government has called for a United Nations-led investigation into the recent political unrest in Bangladesh that resulted in the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed the UK’s desire to see a “peaceful and democratic future” for Bangladesh.

Lammy’s statement emphasized the need for a thorough and independent UN investigation into the events of the past few weeks. He highlighted the UK’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh through its current turmoil and underscored the deep ties and shared Commonwealth values between the two nations.

The Foreign Secretary noted that the past two weeks in Bangladesh have been marked by “unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life.” He urged all parties involved to work towards de-escalating the situation, restoring calm, and preventing further casualties.

Sheikh Hasina, who had been Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for 15 years, resigned amid escalating protests led by students. She fled to India, with speculation about her potential political asylum in London. However, Lammy’s statement made no mention of any asylum request.
