Say Goodbye to Phone Numbers: WhatsApp Embraces Usernames for Seamless Connections

WhatsApp's Username-based Chats: Privacy and Security Reinforced with End-to-End Encryption

WhatsApp, the widely used messaging platform, has been actively rolling out updates with the aim of improving user experience and safeguarding privacy. According to reports from WABetaInfo, the latest advancement in this area revolves around profile updates. WhatsApp is said to be working on introducing a fresh username feature that empowers users to choose a distinctive handle for themselves.

This latest addition to WhatsApp brings it closer to the communication style seen on Instagram, another application owned by Meta. Although the exact workings of usernames on WhatsApp are yet to be revealed, they have the potential to transform the way users interact on the platform. Instead of relying on sharing personal phone numbers or QR codes to start a conversation, users may have the option to connect by using their selected username. It is important to highlight that conversations initiated through usernames will still enjoy the advantages of WhatsApp's strong end-to-end encryption, guaranteeing privacy and security.

Following the introduction of another long-awaited feature, WhatsApp has made yet another notable announcement. Users can now take advantage of message editing, allowing them to modify a sent message within a 15-minute timeframe. It is worth mentioning that any edited message will be clearly marked with an "edited" label, indicating that it has been changed after being sent. This feature provides users with increased flexibility and control over their conversations.

In May, WhatsApp introduced an additional feature called "Chat Lock," which offers users the ability to secure individual one-on-one or group chats by implementing a password or biometric scan. This feature not only enhances privacy but also prevents message previews from being displayed in notifications.

Although the precise release date and confirmation of the username feature are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated that WhatsApp will initially make it available to beta users before eventually extending it to all devices. This phased approach ensures thorough testing and refinement of the feature before reaching a wider audience.
