Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both domestic and international cricket on Saturday. The left-handed batter shared an emotional message on social media, where he revealed his decision to step away from all forms of the game. Dhawan last represented the Indian cricket team in 2022 during the ODI series against Bangladesh, but in recent years, he lost his spot to younger openers like Shubman Gill. In a heartfelt video message on X (formerly Twitter), Dhawan expressed his gratitude to his fans and the cricketing associations for their unwavering support throughout his career.

“As I stand at this juncture, looking back, I see only memories, and ahead, a new life awaits. It was always my dream to play for India, and I am grateful to have lived that dream. I owe a lot to many people—first and foremost, my family, my childhood coaches, and the teammates I played alongside for so many years. I found a new family, gained fame, and received immense love. But, as they say, to move forward, one must turn the page,” Dhawan shared in his post on X.

“I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. As I say goodbye to my cricketing journey, I feel a sense of peace. I played a lot for my country, and I remind myself not to be sad about not playing for India again, but to be happy that I had the opportunity to do so,” he concluded.

Over his illustrious career, Dhawan appeared in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is for India. He was especially prolific in the 50-over format, amassing 6,793 runs at an average of 44.11. In Tests, he averaged 40.61 for his 2,315 runs.
