In Nagaon, Assam, a young woman has been the victim of a gang rape. Tafazul Islam, who was apprehended on Friday, has been taken to the location where the crime occurred to assist in the reconstruction of the incident, according to police reports.
One of the three men accused of the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Assam’s Dhing died after allegedly jumping into a pond while handcuffed, during a police re-enactment of the crime scene early Saturday morning.
Tafazul Islam, the prime suspect who was apprehended on Friday, reportedly escaped police custody and leaped into a nearby pond. The police had taken him to the scene of the crime for reconstruction around 3:30 AM.
The brutal assault occurred on Thursday evening when the girl was riding home from tuition on her bicycle in the Dhing area. She was reportedly gang-raped by three men, then left injured and unconscious by the roadside near a pond. Local residents found her and alerted the police.
Following the incident, one suspect has been arrested, another detained, and efforts are ongoing to capture the third. Assam Director General of Police GP Singh reviewed the investigation’s progress on Friday.
Swapnaneel Deka, Nagaon district’s superintendent of police, explained that Tafazul Islam attempted to escape and jumped into the pond during the re-enactment. Police, assisted by the SDRF team, recovered his body after approximately two hours of searching.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the crime and emphasized the need for prompt and decisive action against such atrocities. He underscored the government’s commitment to addressing crimes against women with urgency and strict measures, reflecting on public perceptions of governmental responses to similar incidents.
Sarma also noted that after the recent Lok Sabha elections, there has been a perceived increase in criminal activities within specific communities and assured that those responsible for the Dhing incident will face justice.
