Meta has reportedly scrapped its plans for the premium Mixed Reality headset that was scheduled for launch in 2027. This decision marks a significant shift in the company’s strategy regarding its future hardware offerings in the mixed reality space.
Meta has been working on a premium Mixed Reality headset that would compete against the likes of Apple Vision Pro. The headset was to launch sometime in 2027 and was to ship a high resolution micro OLED screen, which is what Apple uses for its first generation headset.
The news about Meta’s plan to cancel its premium headset comes from a recent report by The Information. According to the publication citing two Meta employees, the company recently held a product review meeting during which employees were told to stop working on the product.
In a post on Threads, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said “we have many prototypes in development at all times, But we don’t bring all of them to production. We move forward with some, we pass on others. Decisions like this happen all the time, and stories based on chatter about one individual decision will never get the real picture.”
However, Meta seems to be still working on the Quest 4, which might be launched sometime in 2026 and will be priced approximately $500, which roughly translates to Rs 40,000.
Meta’s Reality Labs division, the company arm responsible for developing the Quest line of products, has already lost billions of dollars, but Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is still optimistic about the future surrounding augmented and virtual reality. Last year,Meta stopped the production of the Quest Pro after poor sales and negative reviews.
A few months ago, a report hinted that Apple had stopped working on the development of the Vision Pro 2 after facing major setbacks. It also hinted that the decision was made after the Vision Pro suffered by disappointing sales figures and is instead working on a pocket friendly mixed reality headset that won’t be as expensive as the original Vision pro.
