Incessant rain in Kerala has triggered devastating landslides in the Wayanad district, resulting in the deaths of at least 84 people. The region experienced a record 372 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Officials have confirmed that multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are actively engaged in rescue operations in the affected hilly areas near Meppadi. So far, 250 people have been rescued and relocated to temporary shelters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, assuring full support from the central government. Additionally, he has instructed BJP chief JP Nadda to ensure that party workers assist in the rescue efforts. The Prime Minister’s Office has announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the calamity, and ₹50,000 for those injured.

BJP chief JP Nadda emphasized that the government’s priority is to rescue those trapped and recover the bodies of the deceased. He mentioned that support from central agencies has already reached the state, and efforts are being coordinated with the state government to maximize relief efforts.

The Kerala Chief Minister’s office has established a control room to provide immediate relief and rescue assistance. The affected areas include Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. Health Minister Veena George informed ANI that many roads have collapsed, a bridge has been swept away, and several areas have become inaccessible. Plans to deploy helicopters are being considered, but adverse weather conditions are posing challenges to these efforts.
