IMD Warns of ‘Very Heavy Rainfall’ Across Multiple Regions as Southwest Monsoon Progresses
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of ‘very heavy rainfall’ in several parts of the country as the Southwest monsoon advances. The weather department forecasts continued ‘very heavy’ rainfall over parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka for the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual reduction.
Dr. Soma Sen Roy, a senior scientist at IMD, highlighted that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been observed over Maharashtra and parts of coastal Karnataka in recent days. Anticipating further downpour, Roy mentioned specific regions like south and Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, South Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Coastal Karnataka. Additionally, parts of north interior Karnataka are also expected to experience heavy rainfall.
In Mumbai, heavy rainfall was witnessed on Monday evening, though no major water-logging incidents were reported. Weather officials recorded 50 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning.
The IMD’s bulletin predicts “fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall” accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several northeastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim in the coming week. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over specific regions during certain periods.
Moreover, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds, is forecasted over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh during specified periods. The IMD also anticipates isolated hailstorms and squally winds over south Madhya Pradesh on June 11.
