Divya Deshmukh Clinches Victory in the Girls’ Section of the 2024 World Junior Chess Championship in Gandhinagar, Defeating Beloslava Krasteva of Bulgaria in the Final Round.
Divya Deshmukh, the 18-year-old chess prodigy from Nagpur, secured another remarkable achievement on thursday by winning the World Junior Girls’ Chess Championship. She emerged victorious in the final round against Bulgaria’s Beloslava Krasteva at the Gift City Club.
With an impressive tally of 10 points out of 11 possible, Divya maintained an unbeaten streak, winning nine games and drawing two. The title in the open section was claimed by Kazakhstan’s Kazybek Nogerbek, who secured victory in the last round against the sole overnight leader, Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia, finishing with 8.5 points.

Armenia’s Emin Ohanyan also scored 8.5 points, securing a win against Daniel Quizon of the Philippines. However, Nogerbek clinched the title due to a better tie-break score. Luka Budisavljevic of Serbia secured the third position. Among Indians, Pranav Anand, starting as the third seed, secured the 10th position.
In the girls’ section, Mariam Mkrtchyan secured the runner-up position, trailing behind Divya by half a point. Azerbaijan’s Ayan Allahverdiyeva secured the third position.
