AR Rahman married Saira in 1995.
Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have decided to part ways after nearly three decades of marriage. The couple, who tied the knot in 1995, shared the news through a statement issued by their lawyer, Vandana Shah and Associates.
“After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A.R. Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate from each other,” the statement read.
The couple’s lawyer highlighted that the decision comes after “significant emotional strain in their relationship,” despite their enduring love for each other. “The tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time,” the statement explained.

In a heartfelt note shared on X (formerly Twitter), AR Rahman expressed his emotions, saying, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
The couple has requested privacy during this challenging time, as echoed by their son, Ameen, who shared on Instagram, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
A Love Story That Began with Simplicity
AR Rahman and Saira’s marriage was arranged by his mother, a decision Rahman once discussed in a 2012 interview on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal. The composer revealed he was too busy with his booming career at the time to look for a bride. “I was doing all those films – Rangeela, Bombay – and told my mother to find me a bride,” he shared.
Rahman asked for someone “simple, educated, and humble” and trusted his mother to find the perfect match. Saira was introduced to his family through her sister, whom Rahman’s mother met near a Sufi shrine.
Legacy of a Maestro
AR Rahman, often referred to as the “Mozart of Madras,” rose to international fame with his Oscar-winning work on Slumdog Millionaire. His musical journey began at a young age, with his first major break coming from the soundtrack of Roja (1992). Since then, he has been a stalwart in the music industry, creating timeless compositions that resonate globally.
The couple shares three children—Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen—who have also requested privacy as their family navigates this new phase.
