Bal, a pioneering figure in Indian fashion, was widely respected for his gender-inclusive approach to design, bridging cultural heritage with modern flair.

The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) expressed profound sorrow over Bal’s passing, honoring his contributions. In a heartfelt Instagram post, FDCI stated: “We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal. As a founding member of FDCI, his innovative spirit and artistry redefined Indian fashion and inspired generations. Rest in peace, Gudda. You are a legend.”

A Legacy of Artistic Brilliance and Innovation

Rohit Bal had just showcased his final collection two weeks ago at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, captivating audiences with his timeless designs. Known for his use of luxurious materials like velvet and brocade, Bal’s intricate work echoed India’s opulence. His recent years saw him battle cardiac issues, with a significant health scare in December last year when he was admitted to the ICU in Gurugram.

Bal launched his fashion journey in 1986 with Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd, a venture he co-founded with his brother. By 1990, he had made his solo debut, and his career flourished as he opened flagship stores in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai. Bal also delved into jewelry design, further cementing his place in the industry.

Born on May 8, 1961, into a Kashmiri Pandit family in Srinagar, Bal’s roots influenced his artistic vision. He graduated with a degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, before pursuing a course in fashion at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Over the years, Bal collaborated with prestigious handloom organizations like Khadi Gram Udyog, elevating traditional Indian textiles on global platforms.
