Telangana Imposes One-Year Ban on Mayonnaise Made with Raw Eggs.

In response to alarming food safety concerns, Telangana’s government has enacted a one-year ban on the production, storage, and sale of mayonnaise made from raw eggs. The state commissioner of food safety issued this urgent order on Wednesday, citing several complaints linking the product to recent food poisoning cases.

According to the order, numerous food safety inspections revealed that mayonnaise made with raw eggs has been implicated in multiple food poisoning incidents reported over the past few months. This thick, creamy condiment—commonly known as mayo—typically consists of egg yolks emulsified with oil and seasoned with vinegar or lemon juice.

Tragic Food Poisoning Incident Leads to Public Health Action

The ban comes after a tragic case in Hyderabad, where Reshma Begum, 31, and her two daughters, ages 12 and 14, suffered severe food poisoning after consuming momos from a street vendor in Chintal Basti, Khairatabad, on October 25. Shortly after eating, they experienced severe symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and intense abdominal pain. Despite initially attempting to recover at home, their worsening condition led to an emergency hospital visit on October 27. Tragically, Reshma succumbed on the way to the hospital, while her daughters remain in critical care.

The devastating incident triggered an extensive investigation by local authorities and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s food safety department. Collaborating with Banjara Hills police, investigators traced the outbreak to the street vendor’s stall, which was found operating without the mandatory Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) license. Additionally, officials discovered unhygienic conditions and a lack of basic food safety practices at the stall.

This recent health crisis has intensified public awareness around food safety in Telangana, urging officials to take immediate measures to prevent further foodborne illnesses. The temporary ban on raw-egg mayonnaise aims to protect residents while authorities conduct rigorous inspections and enforce food safety regulations throughout the state.
