In a chilling real-life twist reminiscent of the iconic series Breaking Bad, a chemistry student was allegedly recruited by a drug syndicate in Chennai to produce methamphetamine. The operation was uncovered by the Chennai police, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals, including five engineering graduates and a postgraduate chemistry student.
Authorities discovered a clandestine laboratory in the city where the group was manufacturing the highly addictive drug. Their plans came to a halt when police raided the facility, seizing 245 grams of methamphetamine, along with two laptops and seven mobile phones.
The chemistry student, who previously earned a gold medal in his Bachelor of Science program, was drawn into the operation after the group began peddling small quantities of meth purchased from a local dealer named Arun Kumar, who has a history of assault charges. The scheme escalated when they decided to produce the drug themselves and sought the student’s expertise.
In a deceptive move, one of the arrested men misled his parents into believing he was starting a café, convincing them to lend him money. “His parents had borrowed funds to support him, thinking he was aspiring to start a business,” reported a police officer.
As the investigation continues, the police are on the lookout for two additional suspects, Arun Kumar and Karthik, believed to be connected to the drug trade.
In light of this incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has emphasized the importance of steering youth away from drugs, reaffirming the government’s commitment to combating narcotics.
