Chasing a modest target of 107 runs, New Zealand weathered a fiery spell from Jasprit Bumrah (2/29 in 8 overs). However, Will Young (48* off 87 balls) and Rachin Ravindra (39* off 91 balls) steered the visitors to victory, building a crucial unbeaten 75-run partnership for the third wicket. The Kiwis wrapped up the chase in just 27.4 overs.

New Zealand’s last win in India came in 1988, when they defeated the hosts by 136 runs at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. India went on to win that three-Test series 2-1.

The second Test is scheduled to take place in Pune on October 24.
