The incident at Bhatar State General Hospital has heightened safety concerns among health officials in West Bengal, particularly in the wake of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case.
Following the protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, a civic volunteer accused of threatening a female doctor at Bhatar State General Hospital has been arrested. The suspect, Sushanta Roy, is set to appear in court on Sunday morning, according to police.
Roy had arrived at the hospital in Purba Bardhaman district with complaints of stomach pain and dizziness. Dr. Sutapa Naskar provided him with initial treatment. However, Roy reportedly began harassing Dr. Naskar, threatening, “You know what happened in RG Kar? I will do it here,” as she recounted.
Burdwan District Police Superintendent Amandeep confirmed the arrest following Dr. Naskar’s complaint.
In response to the incident at Bhatar Hospital, doctors and staff staged a protest outside the hospital and surrounded the Bhatar police station on Saturday.
District Deputy Chief Medical Officer Subarna Goswami condemned the incident, calling for severe punishment for the perpetrator.
This latest incident has heightened safety concerns among healthcare professionals in West Bengal, exacerbating the ongoing protests across state-run medical facilities demanding justice for the RG Kar victim and improved security measures.
