Relentless rainfall and subsequent flooding over the past three days have claimed 35 lives in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, leaving a trail of destruction across both states. The severe weather has caused extensive damage to infrastructure, submerged vast agricultural lands, and forced thousands of people to seek essentials as rescue operations intensify.
In Telangana, 16 people have lost their lives, while neighboring Andhra Pradesh has reported 19 fatalities due to rain-related incidents. The continuous downpour, triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, has disrupted daily life and transport links, particularly affecting rail and road networks between the two states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rainfall in several regions of both states on Tuesday, raising concerns about further damage. Telangana’s Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, has estimated preliminary damages at ₹5,000 crore and is seeking immediate financial assistance of ₹2,000 crore from the central government.
The state government has been working round the clock to assess the damage, with IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu stating that detailed reports will be made available soon. The IMD has forecasted heavy rains in districts such as Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Nirmal, with isolated downpours expected in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Jagtial, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy.
In light of these predictions, Chief Minister Reddy has instructed district officials to remain vigilant and evacuate residents from low-lying areas if necessary. He has also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the affected regions and declare the situation a national calamity, announcing ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.
In Andhra Pradesh, the situation is equally grim, with 19 deaths reported so far. The state government has relocated over 31,000 people to 166 relief camps as nearly 450,000 residents have been impacted by the floods. Districts like NTR, Guntur, Krishna, Eluru, Palnadu, Bapatla, and Prakasam are among the worst-hit, with State and National Disaster Response Force teams actively engaged in relief efforts.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been personally overseeing the relief operations, visiting flood-hit areas and coordinating with central authorities for additional resources. He has appealed to the Indian Navy for helicopter support and requested more boats for rescue missions.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed his condolences and urged the Central and Andhra Pradesh governments to provide comprehensive rehabilitation packages. He also called on Congress workers to assist in the ongoing relief efforts in both states.
